Skip the Dallas Traffic: Why Your Next Weekend Should Be in McKinney

May 7, 2026 · Admin

Whenever I want to show off classic Texas charm, I head straight to McKinney. Here is why this historic suburb should be on your radar, and the best local events happening there this month.

Whenever friends visit me from out of state, they always want that stereotypical Texas experience. They expect cowboy hats, historic brick streets, and slow-paced charm. I usually have to break the news that Dallas is mostly glass high-rises and crowded tollways. But when I actually want to show off that classic Texas vibe without driving three hours down to the Hill Country, I just head up US-75 to McKinney.

If you haven't spent a weekend in McKinney lately, you are missing out. It perfectly balances a small-town feel with legitimately great food and entertainment.

Here is why McKinney should be on your radar this month, and what you should actually do when you get there.

The real deal

Downtown McKinney is an actual historic square. It isn't a manufactured outdoor shopping mall designed by a corporate developer. The brick streets are real. The independent boutiques are run by locals, not national chains. You can grab an iced coffee, walk around the old courthouse, and easily waste an entire Saturday morning just window shopping. It is exactly the kind of relaxed morning you need after a heavy workweek.

The outdoor scene is undefeated

McKinney knows exactly how to handle patio weather. TUPPS Brewery recently expanded into a massive new campus, and it is a total game-changer. They took an old grain site and turned it into an absolute playground. You can grab a craft beer, let the kids run around on the massive lawns, and listen to a local band. It gives you the full brewery experience without the stress of a crowded, noisy bar.

If you are looking for free outdoor concerts, HUB 121 is also killing it right now. They built an incredible outdoor amphitheater surrounded by great restaurants. You can post up on a Friday night, order some food, and enjoy a show while the sun goes down.
